I welcome you on the website of Committee on European Affairs (hereinafter: the Committee).
Based on the authorisation of the Act XXXVI of 2012 on the National Assembly, the Committee is vested with decision-making power in the framework of the scrutiny procedure. The Committee may elaborate its standpoint regarding the negotiation position represented by the Government in the Council of the European Union, on behalf of the Hungarian National Assembly.
New opportunities were established for the national Parliaments by the Treaty of Lisbon concerning the examination of the application of the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality in EU draft legislative acts, thus linking national Parliaments to the EU decision-making. In these examination procedures, the Committee has exclusive right of initiative.
I am convinced that it is indispensable to strengthen the legitimacy of the decisions in the European politics and this process entails a significant role for national Parliaments. The Committee is also involved in these tasks, while supporting the representation and promotion of national interests.
In the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the Hungarian Presidency of the EU Council we had the opportunity to organise the largest conference between 27-29 October 2024, which was attended by delegations from the parliaments of the EU Member States, the parliaments of the candidate countries and the European Parliament and gave them the opportunity to discuss the most important challenges facing Europe. The conference and the depth of the work conducted are reflected in the final document adopted.
