Furmint - Grand Tokaj Winery

These days, the Grand Tokaj Winery, owned by and operating under the Tokaj-Hegyalja University Foundation, is one of the most prestigious Hungarian wineries. As the largest winery in the historic Tokaj-Hegyalja Wine Region, which holds the UNESCO World Heritage title, we are the custodians and developers of the local winemaking tradition. It is our objective to combine centuries-old tradition with the most modern processes of viticulture and oenology recognised today to achieve the highest quality and the most satisfied wine consumers. This is guaranteed by our professional team of viticulturists and winemakers working under the supervision of Károly Áts. Our modern winery in Tolcsva is complemented by a barrel maturing plant in the 5.5-km- long cellar system of the nearby Szegi Winery, where noble sweet wines are aged for one to three years after fermentation.

Category-winner wine: Terroir Selection Szarvas Furmint 2021

This single-vineyard furmint of an exceptional region comes from the Szarvas monopole, where only Grand Tokaj Winery has vineyards, on the southernmost slope of Tokaj-hegy with loess deposits on black dacite. It is a sunny and steep hillside overlooking the Alföld, with rows of grapevines extending to the skirts of Kopasz-hegy. The wine has an exciting and tight acid structure, and it is elegant and rounded. It has meadow flowers, a bit of acacia and pear in its nose. Its palate is dominated by ripe fruit: peach fresh pear and juicy summer apple. A long finish, delicate oakiness and a hint of minerality with roasted aromas.
